Format of event

The Chasing Sprint comprises two short races; the prologue (Race 1) and then the chase (Race 2). Each competitor is allocated a start time for Race 1 in the normal way and then their time for Race 1 determines their start time for Race 2.

Map

1:10 000 map by Colin Hicks, drawn in 2000. Contour interval 5m. IOF symbols will be used. There will be no legend on the map.Control descriptions are on the front of the map and loose descriptions will be available for the prologue, but not for the chase.

Terrain

The terrain at Hampton Ridge is typical of the New Forest: a mixture of woodland and open heath. The forested areas are mainly covered with old, established deciduous trees, but there are some new plantations. Runnability is generally good in the wooded areas but some of the bracken has yet to die down and this may reduce speeds. The open is principally heather and marsh but there are some areas of close-cropped grass and bracken. All of the courses in the Chase (2nd round) cross areas of heather that have recently been burnt. These areas are not marked on the map. Marshes are likely to be quite wet and hard going, especially if it rains a lot before the event. Most areas of thick bracken are marked with a green screen on the map.

Race Information

Race 1 maps will be collected at the finish and returned after Race 2. All competitors who start must report to the finish. Whistles are recommended. In addition please note that the terrain is very exposed so you may wish to bring a cagoule.

Facilities

Toilets and traders will be located next to the car park.

Electronic punching

All courses will be using the SPORTident electronic punching system. Your e-card must be cleared and checked at the start before each race. In the event of that an SI control does not beep and flash, competitors should manually punch on the map, and report this at the finish. Competitors hiring e-cards should collect their e-cards from enquiries. There is a hire charge of £1 for the day.

Finish/Assembly area

The walk to the assembly area - which includes both finishes and enquiries - is between 850m and 1.75km from the car park track, with 30m climb. If you entered late and have not paid your £1 late entry fee, please could you pay this at enquiries. For Race 1 your finish time is when you e-punch at the finish control. For Race 2 you finish when you cross the finish line. After crossing the line competitors should stay in order and e-punch at the SI unit a few meters after the line. Officials will be judging close finishes; please respect their decisions. After e-punching at the finish, follow tapes to download your e-card information.

Start for Race 1

Start 1 is 1.0km and 10m climb from assembly, please follow the tapes. There will be no clothing transfer, but clothes can be left in assembly. Start 1 will be a normal timed start. Do not arrive late; start officials cannot change your start time. Race 1 closes at 13:00.

Start for Race 2

Start 2 for the chase is 1.1km and 10m climb from assembly, again follow tapes. After finishing Race 1 you will be handed a copy of your split times for Race 1. Your start time for Race 2 is calculated by adding the time taken for Race 1 to the base time. The base time for courses A and B is 13:10. For courses C and D the base time is 12.50. So, for example, if you are on course C and take 27 minutes and 43 seconds for Race 1, your start time for Race 2 will be 13:17:43. Please calculate your own Race 2 start time. If you wish to write it down, pens and paper will be provided at the finish. There is a mass start at 14.10 for any competitor who is disqualified from Race 1 or took longer than 60 minutes. Call up for the Chasing Start will be at minus 5 minutes. Competitors will be called up in minute blocks and lined up in start order. Please help the start officials by sorting yourself into order. Start 2 will be a timed start. The top 10 competitors for each category will be asked to wear a race number on their chest, which will be provided, together with safety pins, at the start. Race 2 closes at 15.10.
